I turn 50 on August 31st.  I am inviting everybody everywhere to the Kerr Community Center in Bastrop, TX on Saturday, August 31st at 4pm to celebrate my 50th with food, drinks, music from live bands and a DJ, and most importantly, a rally to save my brother Rodney’s life! We will band together to demand that this retaliatory November 20, 2019 execution date be dropped and that Rodney be freed!

I haven’t been able to celebrate my birthday with my brother Rodney or hug him since 1997.  The state of Texas has robbed my brother of over two decades of his life.  That is over two decades that Rodney has not been able to celebrate birthdays, holidays, and other special occasions with the people who love him.  He has not hugged or kissed Mama in over two decades.  Our brothers.  His children.  He has never had the opportunity to hug or kiss his grandchildren.  A part of us has been locked away for over two decades, and now, the state of Texas is trying to execute him on November 20th for a crime he did not commit.  This is all without DNA testing the murder weapon and ALL the crime scene evidence or granting him a new, fair, just retrial.

The only thing I want for my birthday, for Rodney, for my family, is help to #BRINGRODNEYHOMEALIVE ! All I want is for my family to be whole again so we can start our journey to healing. For Mama to be able to hug and kiss Rodney again. For Rodney to be able to live the rest of his life happy and as a free man, enjoying every remaining moment of his life to the fullest. I just want my family to be able to hold Rodney in our arms again.

My 50th birthday event will be a fundraiser for our cross-country trip across the United States, where we’re travelling from Texas to NYC to LA and several key locations in between, connecting with major media outlets every step of the way, to make sure the whole world knows how Texas is trying to kill my brother Rodney despite
1. the medical examiner whose testimony led to Rodney’s conviction in the first place recanted that erroneous statement back in 2012 https://www.austinchronicle.com/daily/news/2012-08-14/bayardo-says-states-case-against-rodney-reed-is-wrong/,
2. despite refusing to DNA test the murder weapon and ALL crime scene evidence, and
3. despite refusing to grant Rodney a fair, just retrial with a jury of his peers and where ALL of his witnesses are called!

Here is a link to our GoFundMe for the cross-country trip: https://www.gofundme.com/the-change-mobile-and-journey-to-bringrodneyhome  (What we’re really needing is a drivable motor home with no mechanical issues).  Another way to help us fund our fight for justice while raising awareness about Rodney’s situation is to purchase one of our conversation starter t-shirts: https://www.reedjusticeinitiative.com/shop/

Confirmed speakers for my 50th birthday celebration:
Mama (Sandra Reed)
Anthony Graves – death row exoneree #138
A surprise, very special guest!
And several other speakers who we’re awaiting their confirmation of attendance
List of other speakers and live music performers TBA!

Come celebrate my 50th birthday with my family and me and join us as we fight to save Rodney’s life!

Here is info about some of what we’ll be yelling all across America:

Three world-renowned forensic experts have submitted affidavits stating that it is “medically impossible” that Ms. Stites had been killed when the state said she was (They say Ms. Stites was actually murdered before midnight).
https://www.innocenceproject.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/Reed_Exhibits-to-Supp-11.073-Writ_6-26-18.pdf
a. Michael M. Baden, M.D. (pages 39 – 44)
b. Werner U. Spitz, M.D., FCAP (pages 79 – 82)
c. LeRoy Riddick, M.D. (pages 115 – 123)

This alone exonerates my brother Rodney.  The State hasn’t contradicted this either. In fact, the State’s three expert witnesses agree with this.

Former Travis County Medical Examiner Roberto Bayardo, M.D. stated the following about his findings regarding evidence of rape: 1. he was wrong and 2. parts of his testimony were misinterpreted by the prosecution. https://www.innocenceproject.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/Reed_Exhibits-to-Supp-11.073-Writ_6-26-18.pdf(pages 10-13)

The testimonies of the state’s other witnesses – DPS Serologist Karen Blakely and Labcorp Serologist Meghan Clement- were also later repudiated.

It was Bayardo’s testimony that led to Rodney’s conviction, so the fact that Bayardo recanted his erroneous statement back in 2012 means THERE HAS BEEN NO CASE AGAINST RODNEY SINCE 2012!  This alone exonerates Rodney. There is too much reasonable doubt to execute my brother. Rodney should be exonerated, not executed.

Help us get the FBI to look into the public corruption that has played a major role in Rodney’s case!

To submit a tip to the FBI:
https://tips.fbi.gov/
(512) 345-1111

We believe making headway with the FBI will be very helpful to Rodney’s situation! My father, Walter Reed, had actually reached out to the FBI about Rodney’s case over 20 years ago when all this started, but not much happened as a result of his efforts.

According to the FBI’s website, public corruption is its top criminal investigative priority. One area that the Bureau’s Public Corruption program focuses on is investigating violations of federal law by public officials at the federal, state, and local levels of government.

We’re asking you to contact the FBI’s Austin satellite office to express your concerns about the corruption in the City of Bastrop, the Texas Attorney General’s office with Lisa Tanner and Matt Ottoway, the City of Giddings, the Giddings Police Department, the Giddings Sheriff Department, the Bastrop Police Department, the Bastrop Sheriff Department, and Bastrop County including the District Attorney’s Office. We need them to investigate the corruption that has been happening within all these entities. Here is the phone number: (512) 345-1111

Also, provide any information you have about David Board, David Hall, Nathan Lapham, Richard Hernandez, Ed Salmela, Curtis Davis, Rocky Wardlow, Charles Pennick, Bryan Goertz, and others in official roles in the Giddings and Bastrop areas. Give specific information, and if you have supporting documents, please submit them with your allegation/s as the FBI does require actual evidence of corruption. We are providing them with the information found within this link: https://www.reedjusticeinitiative.com/to-bastrop-county-district-attorney-bryan-goertz/ We’re also including the fact that the judge who did the hearing, Judge Reva Towslee-Corbet, did not recuse herself when her father, Judge Harold Towslee, was the original trial judge, so the FBI can look deeper into that.

If you choose to call the FBI, be aware that their wait times are long. We do ask you to be patient as talking to an actual human being does make an impact! Definitely also submit a tip online here either before or after speaking with the FBI representative: https://tips.fbi.gov/ You can choose to remain anonymous. Screenshot your message for your records!

We appreciate our sister in Jesus Christ, Natasha Thomas, for having shared her powerful message about how God had put it strongly on her heart to let our family know that we need to reach out to the FBI and let the FBI know about EVERYTHING regarding Rodney’s case from beginning to end. We, the Reed family, believe in God and know that His Hands are in this and that God has been working through people so we can bring Rodney home alive. We thank everybody who has been taking action along with their prayers. Prayers followed up with action are what is going to make all the difference in bringing Rodney home alive.

Really read #Psalm64 when you get the chance and pray!#RODNEYREEDISINNOCENT !#FREERODNEYREED !#BRINGRODNEYHOME !

Join us at the Rally to Reveal the Truth for Rodney Reed at Governor Abbott’s

Picture of 2015 Rally at Governor's Mansion

Event link: https://www.facebook.com/events/433495927248523/

Our beloved Rodney Reed’s scheduled November 20, 2019 execution date is quickly approaching. We all need to do everything in our power to keep the fight going until this execution date is dropped and Rodney is freed!

We worked to keep the momentum going with our weeklong protest outside of Bastrop County District Attorney Bryan Goertz’s office everyday last week. However, we must make sure that our voices continue to be heard!

We are now taking our fight to Governor Abbott, while continuing to put the pressure on Goertz! One very powerful action to accomplish this is taking our fight to the streets!

Let’s remind Governor Abbott that:

1. Rodney Reed is innocent,
2. all the evidence in this case implicates Jimmy Fennell as Ms. Stacey Stites’s actual murderer and that he had help from his friends,
3. that all of the State’s witnesses including Dr. Roberto Bayardo recanted their testimonies stating that they were wrong and misinterpreted. These incorrect testimonies were the only things that Rodney’s conviction rested on. This means there is no case against Rodney!
https://www.innocenceproject.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/Reed_Exhibits-to-Supp-11.073-Writ_6-26-18.pdf (read pages 10-13)
4. And that several members of Ms. Stacey Stites’s family believe that Jimmy Fennel got away with murdering her. They even wrote both Abbott and Goertz a letter stating all of this before Rodney’s March 5, 2015 execution date: https://www.reedjusticeinitiative.com/seeking-justice-for-stacey-stites-a-letter-from-members-of-her-family/

Let’s show Governor Abbott that we are many! We want a street full of people carrying signs and banners for Rodney to show Governor Abbott that the truth has not changed. Science does not lie! The DNA that is on the belt that was used to strangled Ms. Stites to death and that was on the crime scene evidence need to be tested so we can show the world who actually murdered Ms. Stacey Stites, hold them and ALL those who participated in Rodney’s framing accountable, and bring Rodney home alive to the family!!

Please wear any shirt with Rodney’s name on it to the rally! We would still love to have you there even if you don’t have one. We need as many people as possible to show up for Rodney! We will also have sign-making supplies at this rally!

We will gather at the section of the Capitol that faces the Governor’s mansion for high visibility! We will also march! For people with mobility concerns regarding the march- no worries! We would appreciate you holding down the fort at our starting point at the Capitol.

FOR EVERYONE, WHETHER OR NOT YOU ARE ATTENDING THE RALLY:
Social media is critical for raising awareness about Rodney and holding our representatives accountable publicly. Let’s use it to get Governor Abbott’s attention in a very public way.

Governor Abbott is very active on Twitter
Abbott’s Personal Twitter Feed: https://twitter.com/GregAbbott_TX
Official news from Abbott’s Office: https://twitter.com/govabbott

We will be posting our daily Governor Abbott Twitterstorm action item soon.

In the meantime, please retweet with comment the following tweets to Governor Abbott multiple times for the duration of our rally from 7:45am to 12:00pm on Friday, August 2nd:

In Rodney’s legal fight, we are not at the point where a clemency application has been filed. However, Governor Abbott still needs to hear our voices before that time comes especially since we have such little time and it will time before you know it when he does have the power to stop this execution date! We’re asking you to please come out to our rally this Friday from 7:45am to 12:00pm as we plead with Governor Abbott to drop the execution date and free our Rodney Reed!

From this point forward, we go hard to amplify #rodneyreed and #freerodneyreed

Now is the time when we have to fight harder than we’ve ever fought before to save our brother Rodney Reed’s life.  Starting Monday, July 22, 2019; we will protest everyday next week outside of Bastrop County District Attorney Bryant Goertz’s office and bombard social media with posts to fight Goertz’s retaliatory motion to set the November 20, 2019 execution date. We’re also demanding that Rodney Reed be freed AND that he be granted a new trial that admits DNA testing of ALL the crime scene evidence and where ALL his witnesses are called so our brother can show the world HE IS INNOCENT!

The Innocence Project published this petition urging people to stand against Rodney’s execution: https://www.innocenceproject.org/stand-with-rodney-reed-on-texas-death-row/

After filling it out, we’re asking you to share it multiples times on both Twitter and Facebook.

For Twitter, the Innocence Project provides an auto message for people to use to share the petition.  In its place, our family is posting some variation of the following message to both Twitter and Facebook:

“Join us in standing against the execution of our beloved #RodneyReed. #RodneyReedisInnocent on Texas death row. Let’s make sure Bastrop County DA Bryan Goertz feels the pressure! Help us block his retaliatory motion, #FreeRodneyReed, and #BringRodneyHome! https://www.innocenceproject.org/stand-with-rodney-reed-on-texas-death-row/

We will be sending out a letter soon talking about how the Reed family and our supporters will continue to fight hard to block Bryan Goertz’s motion to execute our brother Rodney on November 20, 2019.  This is in response to Bryan Goertz is rushing to murder Rodney without allowing DNA testing or a new trial to examine the extensive evidence that’s out there and that proves Rodney is innocent (the same evidence that implicates Jimmy Fennell as the actual murderer— with the help of his friends).

Now is the time we need people to tune into what we’re doing and stand with us in person and on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter more than ever. This a literal life and death critical moment when we really need all hands on deck to make the most noise possible in every way to stop Bryan Goertz’s retaliatory motion to set an execution date for our brother Rodney.

Stayed tuned to what we post about Rodney and be sure to comment on and share each post and as much as you can.

And don’t stop here.  Join us at the protests. Even if you can only come one day, our family would appreciate that more than you could ever imagine. We need as many people as possible on the ground. And reach out to people by phone. Call anyone and everyone who you feel will band with us and help us in this fight— including our elected officials, high profile people, and your church and faith leaders.

Let’s make #RodneyReed, #FreeRodneyReed, #RodneyReedIsInnocent, #BringRodneyHome, #GrantRodneyReedANewTrial, and #TestTheDNA trending topics until Bryan Goertz’s motion to set an execution date is dismissed or dropped.  If you use #TestTheDNA, please include another hashtag with #RodneyReed so my brother’s name can trend with it.

We are so powerful when we stand together!  We have the power to use our voices and both our social media and physical presence to block Bryan Goertz’s vindictive motion and to bring Rodney home! Rodney needs all of us to go hard from here on out to amplify his name and his story across the world so we can save his life and finally hug him when he is freed and we bring him home!

We need all of your help and appreciate everything y’all have been doing so far!

How Can We Ensure Mr. Goertz Reads My Entire 04/09/2019 Email and Acts On It?

Good morning family,

I sent Bastrop County District Attorney Bryan Goertz an email and need your help making sure he was able to receive and read my entire message. My email is in response to the comments he made in the following article on April 2nd: https://www.statesman.com/news/20190402/letter-writing-campaign-seeks-new-trial-for-death-row-inmate-rodney-reed

To give a summary, my message to Mr. Goertz is that he needs to do everything in his power to see to it that Rodney gets a new and fair trial where all the evidence can be seen and heard because Mr. Goertz has an ethical duty to do so.

This is the exact message I sent to him on April 9, 2019:

“Good Morning Mr. Goertz,

You are not telling the whole truth here. The truth of the matter is you do have the power to ensure Rodney is granted a new trial. You need to step up. As district attorney, you can concede in court that a convicted person is 1.) innocent or 2.) that their conviction is unconstitutional. Because Rodney’s conviction was the result of a series of constitutional violations- including prosecutorial misconduct, trial by a jury of folks who were not his peers, failure to include all evidence and witness testimonies, inadequate representation, and so much more- you can do something about it. In fact, as district attorney, if you think there is a constitutional violation in a person’s case, you have an ethical duty to concede error.

In the article, you say, “I don’t think there’s an innocent man on death row,” referring to my brother. Now this is coming from a man who graduated from Baylor Law School- one of the top 50 law schools in the country! I don’t understand it. And it’s concerning to say the least! How do you not see that my brother is innocent of the murder of Ms. Stacey Stites with all the evidence that is out there?

You have the testimonies- sworn affidavits- of 4 medical examiners, including even the one who put Rodney on death row, Dr. Roberto Bayardo. In Bayardo’s recanted statement from 2012, he stated that his finding “very few” sperm indicated that my brother and Ms. Stites had sex “not less than 24 hours before Ms. Stites’s death.” So, you have Dr. Bayardo and three other independent medical examiners- those three being experts in their field- testifying that there’s no way possible Rodney could have killed Ms. Stites based on the time of death and the lividity of her body. When you consider this information and also Jimmy Fennell’s testimony that he and Ms. Stites spent a quiet evening at home around this time, based on this information alone, there’s no way in the world Rodney could have committed this murder. And then with all the other evidence that has come out pointing at the DNA of known associates of Fennell’s- cops David Hall and Ed Salmela– how can you not see that Rodney is not guilty of the murder of Ms. Stacey Stites? This makes me seriously question the caliber of law school graduates that Baylor Law School is sending out into our communities.

And if comprehension of facts is not one of your strong suits, one thing that does not require a strong command of comprehension is the fact that Rodney’s conviction was and still is unconstitutional. Rodney’s right to due process was violated! Rodney never did get a fair trial in the first place. He did not get a chance to call his witnesses. There was evidence that was not tested and still has not been tested. The most important piece of evidence in this case- the belt, the murder weapon itself, that was used to strangle Ms. Stites to death- has never been tested! How are you not going to DNA test the murder weapon and then consistently defend Rodney’s conviction, oppose DNA testing, and advocate for his execution?

All we’re asking of you is to do everything in your power to see that Rodney is granted a new and fair trial. Every major district attorney’s office has a conviction integrity unit or something to that effect which includes a process for reviewing cases of claimed innocence, so what we’re asking you for is normal. Most importantly, that is the just thing to do period, and especially when the stakes are as high as they are when you consider that the death penalty is permanent!

You can make recommendations. Your word is very powerful. You can bring a quick end to this abuse. You do have the power to ensure that Rodney is granted a new trial. Seek truth and justice! Most importantly, stand up and do the right thing!

Respectfully,

Rodrick Reed”

Maybe y’all can get through to Mr. Goertz. If you can, ask Mr. Goertz to do everything he can do- everything in his power- to ensure that my brother Rodney is granted a new and fair trial where all the evidence can be seen and heard. Ask Mr. Goertz to make time to sit down with my mom and me. I have reached out to Mr. Goertz multiple times by phone and by email and I still have not received a response from him directly. I will continue trying to do so. I do need some help in my efforts. Maybe y’all can support me along the way. Call him. Email him. Fill out a postcard. If something in my letter resonates with you, tell Mr. Goertz that. Maybe you could even read the entire thing back to Mr. Goertz. Tell Mr. Goertz to reach out to me by phone at 512- two seven zero-1596. Or tell him to email me. He has my personal email and he can reach me there 24/7/365. I will respond.

Whatever you can do to support the efforts of my immediate family and me would be greatly appreciated. The number to Bryan Goertz’s office is 512-five eight one-7125. His work email is bryan dot goertz at co.bastrop.tx.us. Of course, always be respectful when you reach out to his office.

Family, I ask you, what are your thoughts on how we can ensure Mr. Goertz reads my entire 04/09/2019 email and acts on it?

Thank you, family, with much love from my family.
